Saving the New Savannah
Bluff Lock and Dam

This week I had the opportunity to testify before the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee during a Member Day Hearing on proposals for the Water Resources Development Act. The Water Resources Development Act is a biennial piece of legislation that authorizes water projects throughout the nation. In my testimony, I highlighted the issues the CSRA has experienced with the Corps of Engineers regarding the New Savannah Bluff Lock and Dam.

Congressman Rick W. Allen testifies before the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.

The Corps recently selected a rock weir as an alternative to replace the lock and dam - a design that drops the pool level that our community needs. I do not support this alternative and believe that the lowering of the pool does not meet the requirements of the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation (WIIN) Act, and is unacceptable. I urged the committee to work with me to include language in the upcoming water bill that will repair and maintain the lock and dam and keep the pool level that our community needs, while still accommodating the modest fish passage required by the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project.

I will continue fighting to save the lock and dam.

Fighting federal overreach.
Congressman Rick W. Allen speaks during debate on the House floor.

The House voted on H.R. 2339, the Flavored Tobacco Ban and Excise Tax Increase Act. This partisan, overreaching bill would ban all flavors for all tobacco products and impose a new excise tax on nicotine used in vaping. While we can all agree that the current youth vaping trend is cause for concern, the bill does nothing to address the youth vaping epidemic or the use of illicit products that have been linked to the outbreak of lung illnesses.

Stopping environmentally harmful overregulation.

During a House Agriculture Conservation and Forestry Subcommittee hearing on Promoting Rural Economies and Healthy Forests, I highlighted how government overregulation is harming the environment and forest industry – as demonstrated by the recent California wildfires.

Filing taxes every year shouldn’t be a burdensome process, which is why the 115th Congress took action and passed sweeping tax reform to simplify the process. We must build on this success, which means that no family should have to worry about paying someone to help file their taxes.

That’s why I am a cosponsor of H.Res. 810, a bipartisan resolution commending the achievements of the IRS’s Free File program -- an innovative public-private partnership between tax preparation software companies, the IRS, 22 states and the District of Columbia offering free online preparation and e-filing services to low- and moderate-income taxpayers at no cost to the government.

Do you have a bill that you would like to see highlighted or that you would like me to support? Share your thoughts with me! You can email me ⇒ HERE, contact any of our offices or join the conversation on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

Sincerely,

Rick Allen
Member of Congress
