Pelosi's Partisan Wish List

All across America, essential workers have been showing up and getting the job done. President Trump and the Senate have also been working, while Speaker Pelosi has refused to provide a clear plan on when the House will get back to business as usual. On Friday, the House finally came back for a vote – and it’s become clear why Speaker Pelosi has caused delay. She used this pandemic as an opportunity to craft a 1,800 page, partisan wish list totaling $3 trillion.

Her bill prioritizes Democrats’ socialist agenda over addressing the crisis at hand. This legislation includes several provisions unrelated to COVID-19, including:
  • Anti-Work Provisions:
    • Makes economic recovery more difficult by making it more profitable for individuals not to work
  • Prisoner Release:
    • Provides get-out-of-jail free cards for certain prisoners
  • Incentives For Illegal Immigration:
    • Awards federal funding to sanctuary cities
    • Requires review of those detained by ICE so certain illegal immigrants can be released
    • Prevents the deportation of illegal immigrants
    • Authorizes illegal immigrants to work during this crisis
    • Allows illegal immigrants to collect Economic Impact Payments
  • Wasteful Spending:
    • Provides funding to matters unrelated to combating COVID-19
  • Wholesale Election Law Changes:
    • Federalizes the entire election process and takes power away from the states
    • Calls for mailed absentee ballots to be sent to every voter permanently
    • Permits same day voter registration nationwide which would lengthen voting lines
    • Codifies ballot harvesting
    • Enacts national vote by mail
    • Prevents states from having voter ID requirements
While I’m thankful this bill has no chance of becoming law, I find it egregious the Speaker would abuse her power to push her partisan agenda.

ICYMI: I held a telephone town hall with Dr. Brooks Keel, President of Augusta University, to discuss the coronavirus.

During the call, Dr. Keel gave an update on testing in the state of Georgia and shared resources for those who would like to get tested. We also took some time to answer questions from constituents about the coronavirus. For those who were unable to participate, here are some of the highlights.

As a reminder, Augusta University Health is offering free initial telehealth exams via the AU ExpressCare app.

For more information on virtual screenings, visit augustahealth.org/expresscare/virtual-visit.

I also want to highlight how the U.S. continues to lead in testing. On Wednesday, President Trump announced that we have exceeded 10,000,000 COVID-19 tests.

Corps of Engineers to reopen Savannah River recreation areas

The Army Corps of Engineers announced a phased reopening of campgrounds and additional boat ramps along the Savannah River. For more information on which areas will reopen, click here.

The Chinese Communist Party played a leading role in the cover up of the coronavirus outbreak and by neglecting to share information, their inaction has cost American lives and harmed the global economy. It’s time to hold China accountable.

That’s why I am a cosponsor of the COVID-19 Accountability Act. This legislation gives the President the authority to impose sanctions on China if they fail to cooperate with a full investigation into the events leading up to the COVID-19 outbreak. It also requires the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate the Chinese pharmaceutical industry and expands the research and development tax credit to incentivize innovation and commercial development of goods in the United States.
