This week I welcomed President Donald Trump to the Peach State! During his visit to the UPS Hapeville Airport Hub in Atlanta, President Trump announced a new policy to help streamline infrastructure project approvals in Georgia and across the country. This is great news as we rebuild America’s infrastructure.
Before coming to Congress I worked in the construction industry, so I know that too often, overregulation and red tape can cause unnecessary delays and make projects more costly. That is why the Trump Administration’s new rule to expedite environmental reviews under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) will ensure infrastructure can be built in a timely, efficient, and affordable manner.
The timing for this critical action could not be better, as we continue reopening the economy following the COVID-19 outbreak and return to an economic boom! I will keep fighting to modernize and strengthen our nation’s infrastructure.
Visiting the Savannah River Site with National Nuclear Security Administrator Lisa E. Gordon-Hagerty
Last week I joined U.S. Department of Energy Under Secretary for Nuclear Security and Administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Lisa E. Gordon-Hagerty and Rep. Joe Wilson at the Savannah River Site to discuss its critical ongoing missions and the future of plutonium pit production.
U.S. Department of Labor Announces Funding to Support Women’s Participation in Apprenticeships
The U.S. Department of Labor recently announced $4.1 million in grants are available to help women pursue successful careers in manufacturing, infrastructure, cybersecurity, healthcare and other industries. As a member of the House Education and Labor Committee, my priority is ensuring our workforce has the necessary skills for today’s job market, which often starts with apprenticeships.
Reopening Our Schools
August typically marks the beginning of the school year for families across the nation. However, I recognize this school year will look different than previous years due to the impact of COVID-19. As the Senior Republican on the House Education and Labor Committee, Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education, I believe it is in the best interest of our students to safely return to the classroom this fall.
The importance of in-person learning is well documented, and research has shown that school closures disproportionately affect the most vulnerable students. Groups such as the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine note that the goal should be to have children safely return to in-school learning when offering recommendations on how to best accommodate learning during the COVID-19 outbreak.
Congratulations to Troy Bland of Bland Farms in Vidalia!
This week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the appointment of Troy Bland to the USDA Fruit and Vegetable Industry Advisory Committee! I was happy to lend my support for his appointment and wish him the best of luck on this endeavor.
Augusta University Health Awarded FCC Grant to Expand Telehealth Services
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) awarded a $710,316 grant to Augusta University Medical Center to support their efforts to expand telehealth services. This is the second FCC grant awarded to AU Health, bringing the total funding received since May to $824,060. I’m proud to support AU Health's efforts and the important work they do to serve Georgians throughout the state.
