My week serving georgia's 12th district...

To commemorate Memorial Day, I spent some time in Augusta at the Run to Remember Race and in Dublin at the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center.

I hope you were all able to take some time to thank our brothers and sisters for their great sacrifice to our nation.

Earlier this week, I attended and spoke at the memorial ceremony for Private First Class Ivan Roberts who went missing in action during the Korean War over sixty years ago.

I’d like to thank the family of Ivan Roberts for allowing me to say a few words – I hope we always remember those who sacrificed everything for our country!

We also remembered the brave and resilient souls who stormed the beaches of Normandy, France on the 74th anniversary of D-Day earlier this week.

The House addressed Washington’s out-of-control spending habits by passing President Trump’s rescission proposal to cut nearly $15 billion in wasteful government spending.

It’s high time that we make significant spending cuts in order to rein in our ever growing national debt so our kids and grandkids are not saddled with this burden!

President Trump signed significant legislation into law this week: The Childhood Cancer STAR Act and the VA MISSION Act. S. 292, the Childhood Cancer STAR Act would empower medical researchers to find cures and treatments for pediatric cancer and will bring hope to young patients and their families.

S. 2372, the VA MISSION Act, will provide veterans more choice and expanded access to private care so the men and women who have served can finally obtain healthcare that works for them!

The VA MISSION Act streamlines the department’s community care programs into one cohesive program to allow for more accountability within the VA.  It also contains a number of provisions to improve and expand the VA’s ability to train, recruit, and retain the very best healthcare providers.

For those who do not have a VA clinic nearby, you will now be able to get care closer to home -- and the legislation provides that our doctors who choose to do this work will be paid in a timely fashion.

The House Education and Workforce Committee held a full committee hearing on “Examining the Policies and Priorities of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services” with Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar.

My colleagues and I in the House passed H.R. 5895, which includes the Energy and Water, Legislative Branch, and Military Construction/Veterans Affairs appropriations bills for Fiscal Year 2019 – and it includes critical funding for Georgia-12.

This legislation:
  • Authorizes $99 million for a Cyber Training Facility at Fort Gordon
  • Funds the critical missions at Savannah River Site
  • Provides $15.3 billion for the Department of Energy’s nuclear weapons security programs
  • Authorizes $85.3 billion for VA programs including VA medical care, processing disability claims, VA construction, and the new VA electronic health record system

I held a Telephone Town Hall where I was able to take some questions and hear from Georgia-12 constituents on the issues that are most important to them.
