this week in washington...

This week we celebrated Teacher Appreciation Week and National Nurses Week!

I hope you were all able to take some time to thank a teacher and a nurse for the impact they make on all of our lives - the work they do every day is truly a public service!

In light of Nurses Week, I was able to meet with the Emergency Nurses Association to hear some the concerns they face in their field.

I hope you all had a great week in Washington!

I had the opportunity to visit Fort Belvoir where I received an update on the progress being made to move U.S. Army Cyber Command to Fort Gordon.

My visit could not have come at a better time on the heels of the exciting Gate 6 groundbreaking ceremony at Fort Gordon last week. This new gate symbolizes the growth we are seeing at Fort Gordon and the road ahead, and I was happy to meet with ARCYBER leadership on what we can do in the 12th district to prepare for the remaining elements still to come to Fort Gordon. We discussed many pressing issues to the cyber mission, including what it takes to recruit and retain the greatest talent to fight for our national security. As a member of the House Education and Workforce Committee, this is a problem we are hearing across the board, and I remain committed to ensuring that we have skilled workers who are ready and capable to take on the jobs of today and tomorrow.

With strategic Army, industry, academia and community partners, I am confident that Fort Gordon will become a hub of innovation and cyber development. I’d like to thank Fort Belvoir for welcoming me, and I look forward to working once again with Major General Stephen Fogarty, and congratulate him on his confirmation as U.S. Army Cyber Command’s next leader.

The House Education and Workforce Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Development held a hearing on “Closing the Skills Gap: Private Sector Solutions for America’s Workforce.” To view my questions, please CLICK HERE.

I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress to ensure that we have a skilled workforce to fill the over 6.5 million jobs open today!

The House passed H.R. 3053, the Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act, legislation I supported to address the spent nuclear fuel that currently sits in our communities throughout America, including right here in Georgia-12 at Plants Hatch and Vogtle.

I was happy to speak on the House floor in support of this legislation and I will continue to urge my colleagues in the Senate to act swiftly in passing this critical bill!

President Donald Trump announced that he will be terminating the United States’ participation in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with Iran, better known as the Iran Deal, and re-imposing the sanctions previously lifted under the deal. See my thoughts below!

The Department of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos also stopped by the office to discuss the plan to improve our education system nationwide to educate the “whole child.”

Thanks so much for stopping by the office!

I joined fellow members of the Georgia delegation on the House floor to honor the life and legacy of the late Governor Zell Miller – a true Georgia legend!

Thank you to everyone who participated in this touching tribute.

Department of Energy Secretary Rick Perry executed a waiver to conclude construction of the Mixed-Oxide Fuel Fabrication Facility (MOX) at Savannah River Site. Additionally, the National Nuclear Security Administration recommended repurposing the current MOX facility at Savannah River Site to produce plutonium pits, while also maximizing pit production activities at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

I hope you all have a great weekend!
