Happy Thanksgiving!

This week, families across the nation will participate in one of America’s most cherished traditions as they gather around the kitchen table to celebrate Thanksgiving. I understand this year may be difficult for many families as prices and inflation continue to rise, and please know that I’m fighting for solutions in Congress.

Thanksgiving

Despite the many challenges currently facing our nation, we are still incredibly blessed to live in America – where we are still the land of the free. My hope for you on this special day is that you can take some time to relax with loved ones and reflect on the many blessings that we are able to enjoy as Americans!

Last week was a busy one in Washington, and I want to provide you with a brief legislative update:

Build Back Broke

House Democrats passed Biden’s “Build Back Better” Act, which the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates will add $367 billion to the deficit over the next decade. Simply put, this bill would destroy our economy as we know it and is the biggest expansion of government in our lifetime. Enacting it will only make our nation’s many ongoing crises worse, which is why I urge my Senate colleagues to stand strong and oppose this bill.

This process has been a slap in the face to every American taxpayer. The 2,000+ page bill will raise taxes, radically expand the IRS's access to Americans’ bank accounts, and rampantly spend taxpayer dollars -- and it was crafted behind closed doors with no bipartisan input.

So what will this bill do?

  • Expand IRS authorities to access bank account information on the vast majority of Americans to collect money to pay for the bill– not just those believed to have committed tax fraud.

  • Allow taxpayer-funded abortions by excluding the long-standing Hyde Amendment.

  • Perpetuate labor shortages by continuing welfare benefits for able bodied adults without work requirements - at a time when there are over 10.4 million job openings.

  • Threaten the viability of smaller, private child care providers, such as churches and community centers, from participating in child care programs due to new federal mandates.

    • Child care centers and preschools affiliated with religious organizations serve 53 percent of families in this country, according to a survey by the Bipartisan Policy Center.

  • Expand the worst parts Obamacare.

  • Prioritize Green New Deal initiatives by giving out tax credits to the wealthy who can afford to purchase big ticket items, such as electric vehicles.

  • Impose over $400 billion in small business tax hikes.

  • Impede domestic energy and mineral production, increasing our dependencies on resources supplied by OPEC, Russia and China.

  • Include a tax on natural gas, raising the costs of utility bills and placing 90,000 jobs at risk.

  • Increase corporate taxes by $800 billion, where multiple analyses have found that a sizable portion of the increase will fall on workers and lead to higher prices.

Fighting Against Biden’s Workplace Vaccine Mandate

11.18 Press Conference on CRA

While I’m glad to see that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has suspended its planned implementation and enforcement of Biden’s vaccine mandate on private workplaces due to ongoing litigation, it is also our duty as members of Congress to fight this likely unconstitutional mandate legislatively. I joined all 50 Republican Senators and more than 160 House members in introducing a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution to nullify President Biden’s vaccine mandate for private workplaces.

As I said on the House floor, top-down government mandates do not work – the decision to get a vaccine should be a personal choice between an individual and their doctor. This rule will cripple job creators while worsening our nation’s current labor shortage, supply chain crisis and rising prices for everyday goods and services, which is why I’m fighting to ensure it never sees the light of day!
