On this day 19 years ago, thousands of Americans said goodbye to their loved ones not knowing they would not return home that night. Today we remember the lives of those who died on September 11, 2001 from terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Virginia, on United Airlines Flight 93 which crashed in Pennsylvania, and the first responders who charged toward the chaos as others fled to safety. It was a dark day for our country – and one that we will never forget.
In the moments and months that followed, we saw Americans come together with resilience, strength and patriotism. In these uncertain times, I pray our nation continues to face each new challenge with the same determination we demonstrated on 9/11.
While there is still more work ahead as we continue to recover from the impact of COVID-19, the American economy is on the road to recovery with Georgia leading the way.
Over the past few weeks there’s been encouraging economic news that I want to make sure you’ve seen:
Visiting Burke, Bulloch and Jenkins County Schools
Congressman Allen meets with Burke County Board of Education and the System-Level Planning team
Congressman Allen visits Statesboro High School
Congressman Allen visits Jenkins County Schools
As the Senior Republican on the House Education and Labor Committee, K-12 Subcommittee, ensuring our students are able to succeed this school year – whether in-person or virtual – is one of my top priorities. I had the opportunity to see firsthand how Burke, Bulloch and Jenkins counties have adapted to learning in the age of coronavirus, and though it hasn’t been easy, I’m so grateful to the teachers and staff who are working tirelessly to teach our students.
I also recently received an update from Dr. Kyle Marrero, President of Georgia Southern University, to hear how their back to school plan is going with students back on campus.
ICYMI: I discuss how schools can reopen safely if they do it right in the Washington Examiner
While this is not the school year we expected or that our students deserve, their futures are too important, and we cannot let their education or their future hang in limbo. As we always do, we must continue to adapt and overcome. As many of the schools in the 12th district head back to school, I wanted to highlight Columbia County and how they can serve as a model for successful school reopening throughout the country. Check out my opinion piece here.
Arrival of U.S. Army Cyber Command to Fort Gordon
Last week I attended the dedication ceremony of U.S. Army Cyber Command Fortitude Hall Building at Fort Gordon. The ceremony was a culmination of years of hard work, and it was an honor to witness the historic dedication of U.S. Army Cyber Command’s Headquarters, signaling the official arrival of ARCYBER to Fort Gordon.
In preparing for the move of Army Cyber, I had the privilege of working with Fort Gordon to secure critical funding for construction projects, including the Headquarters, and I saw firsthand the commitment our men and women in uniform have to the future of cyber and security of our nation. I look forward to continuing to support their mission and seeing the positive impact on our community.
Addressing Trade Practices that Harm Georgia Farmers
Under President Trump, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Department of Commerce are taking steps to address the threat posed by increased foreign imports to American producers of seasonal and perishable fruits and vegetables. You can learn more about the plan here.
Meeting with Source America
Thanks to Source America for meeting via zoom to discuss assisting people with disabilities in the workforce and helping them find job opportunities.
Update from Carl Vinson VA
I will always fight for our veterans and ensure they have access to the care they need, especially in these unsteady times. I recently received an update from the Carl Vinson VA in Dublin to hear about their ongoing operations and service to our veterans.
As always, my office is here to help. You can email me ⇒ HERE, contact any of our offices or join the conversation on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
Sincerely,
Rick Allen
