Russia's War Against Ukraine

Over the last few days, we have seen Russian President Vladimir Putin launch an unjustified war against Ukraine, putting the lives of millions and security of Europe in grave danger. We must stand with Ukraine as they bravely defend their sovereignty.

Unfortunately, we saw this invasion coming as Putin deployed Russian troops to the Ukraine border for months. However, rather than take concrete steps to deter Putin, the Biden Administration’s energy policies only emboldened his actions. Specifically, Biden’s gift of the Nord Stream 2 Pipeline granted Putin more control over energy in the region while at the same time, his policies weakened America’s energy independence.

That’s why today I led a letter to the White House urging President Biden to announce new steps to cripple Russia’s energy sector, while immediately reopening America’s pipelines and oil production, during the State of the Union Address tomorrow.

Specifically, the letter, signed by over 40 members of Congress, demands that the Administration immediately restore the oil production policies that were established in 2017 under the Trump Administration. Under these policies, America was energy independent and generating billions in revenue to boost economic growth. At a time when there is war in Europe and gas prices and inflation are running rampant here in the U.S., it is clear that energy security is critical to both economic and national security.

I joined National Report on Newsmax to discuss the latest in Ukraine. While slow in getting started, the economic sanctions launched by U.S. and the European Union so far have caused a blow to Russia’s economy. However, the sanctions do not go far enough in hitting their energy sector. When the world isn’t buying Russian oil, it’ll take Putin’s profits away and stop his war financing.

I’m proud to cosponsor H.R. 6748, the Midland over Moscow Act, which would reduce barriers for American energy producers to increase exports of U.S. Liquid Natural Gas while requiring the Administration to develop an energy strategy to counter Russia. This bill would strengthen U.S. energy independence and make American allies less dependent on Russian oil and gas.
