As the Senior Republican on the Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education Subcommittee of the House Education and Labor Committee, I took some time to visit the Georgia state capitol to discuss K-12 education priorities with members of the House and Senate Education Committees, as well as Superintendent Richard Woods.
I also visited Drew Charter School and T. H. Slater Elementary while in Atlanta to meet with administrators, tour the schools, and visit a few classrooms.
In this new role, I am looking forward to working with our state representatives and my colleagues in Congress to ensure our bright young scholars are sufficiently prepared to enter the workforce and achieve the American dream. I believe the best way I can do this is to keep Washington, D.C. out of the classroom. Rest assured, my goal is to send flexible funds to Georgia without burdensome strings attached.
In Augusta, I attended the TaxSlayer headquarters’ ribbon cutting and also had a great meeting with the Alzheimer’s Association to receive an update on their work advocating for Alzheimer’s research.
Thank you to the Alzheimer’s Association for taking the time to stop by the office.
I hosted a public briefing to highlight the Free File Program.
Free File is a great example of how government, the private sector, and community groups can work together to provide an important service to the people. Filing taxes can be a burdensome task, but I was thrilled to offer this opportunity for Georgia taxpayers to learn more about how they can file their taxes online and free of charge.
Congressman Joe Wilson from South Carolina and I held a press conference in Augusta to encourage members of the community to attend the public comment hearing about the future of the New Savannah Bluff Lock and Dam hosted by the cities of Augusta and North Augusta.
There was a great turnout of folks at the public comment hearing and there is still time to make your voice heard. Comments on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ plan can be emailed to CESAS-PD@usace.army.mil, or mailed to Savannah District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Planning Division, Attention: Ms. Robin Armetta, 100 W. Oglethorpe Ave., Savannah, GA 31401-3604.
I toured the Emanuel County Medical Center to see areas of the hospital that have been improved as a result of the Georgia state tax credit program designed for rural hospitals.
Our caregivers in Emanuel County do tremendous work for their community and Georgia’s 12th district. Thanks for showing me around!
In Vidalia, I attended the Vidalia Rotary Club meeting and toured the Koppers Plant.
Koppers is a global provider of treated wood products, wood treatment chemicals, and carbon compounds – and the Vidalia plant is a tremendous job creator in Toombs County.
I also traveled to Waynesboro where I spoke at the Waynesboro Rotary Club meeting to talk about my work on behalf of the 12th district during the 116th Congress.
To end the week, I joined Secretary of Energy, Rick Perry, and other leaders from across our great state for a tour of Plant Vogtle.
We were able to see the tremendous progress being made on units 3 and 4, as well as the top head placement of the Unit 3 containment vessel. Georgia-12 is leading the way in America’s nuclear energy expansion and I am very thankful to all of those who came to the 12th district to support this crucial project.
