Rep. Rick Allen Visits Plant Vogtle Along with Secretary Perry, Secretary Perdue, and Governor Kemp

U.S. Congressman Rick W. Allen (R-GA-12) issued the following statement today after touring Plant Vogtle in Waynesboro, Georgia, along with Secretary of Energy, Rick Perry, Secretary of Agriculture, Sonny Perdue, Governor Brian Kemp, and others. During the visit, Secretary Perry announced that the Department of Energy will guarantee $3.7 billion in additional loans for the construction and completion of Units 3 and 4 – the first new nuclear reactors to be built in the United States in more than 30 years.

“Today’s announcement from Secretary Perry to guarantee up to $3.7 billion in additional loans for the Plant Vogtle nuclear expansion project marks a pivotal moment for the continued progress on Units 3 and 4,” said Congressman Allen. “The significance of this project for Georgia’s 12th district, the state of Georgia, and our entire nation is paramount and I am extremely grateful for the continued investment. Georgia-12 is leading the way in America’s nuclear energy expansion, and I am proud that so many of our nation’s leaders were able to visit Plant Vogtle to show the world that America is a dominant player in the global nuclear industry.”

Background: After Westinghouse declared bankruptcy nearly two years ago, Georgia Power, Oglethorpe Power, MEAG Power, and Dalton Utilities made the decision to move forward with construction of two new nuclear reactors at Plant Vogtle, located in Georgia’s 12th Congressional District. Southern Nuclear, a subsidiary of Southern Company, is now overseeing construction. Additionally, last year, Congress, with Congressman Allen’s support, extended the Nuclear Production Tax Credit, an important provision to the future of new nuclear.
