My week serving georgia's 12th district...

The House passed
legislation that I sponsored to have the Statesboro VA Clinic renamed as the Ray Hendrix Veterans Clinic.

I cannot think of a better or more deserving man to have his service to our nation and his community honored at the local VA clinic he helped establish in Statesboro.

I was proud to speak on the House floor in honor of Sergeant Major Ray Hendrix and I thank all of my colleagues for their support.

The House also passed significant legislation to eliminate harmful Dodd-Frank regulations, break down regulatory barriers for terminally ill patients, and enhance several research initiatives focused on childhood cancer and survivor needs.

These bills will now be sent to the President’s desk to become the law of the land!

We also passed an important bill to fully fund and rebuild our military.

It is Congress’ constitutional obligation to provide for the common defense, and with today’s passage of the National Defense Authorization Act, we have done our duty in the House of Representatives to fund our troops, keep America safe and restore our military readiness. H.R 5515 authorizes $700 billion in defense spending for the upcoming fiscal year and sets bold priorities for our military – including replacing  equipment, rebuilding infrastructure, and the largest pay raise for our troops in over nine years.

Specific to Georgia-12, this important legislation authorizes $99 million in military construction funds for a Cyber Instructional Facility at Fort Gordon, furthering the move of U.S. Army Cyber Command to Georgia. It also authorizes about $1.5 billion in funds for nuclear material management, environmental cleanup, and construction at the Savannah River Site. The annual National Defense Authorization Act is one of the most important votes I take in Congress each year. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to do their constitutional duty by taking up the NDAA and I look forward to seeing this critical national security bill signed into law by President Trump.

I was proud to support this bill, which will:

  • Provide a well-deserved 2.6% pay raise for our troops, the largest in 9 years
  • Authorize $99 million in military construction funds for a Cyber Instructional Facility at Fort Gordon
  • Extend special pay and bonuses for Service members in high-demand fields
  • Authorize $18.6 billion to rehabilitate and replace outdated Army equipment
  • Authorize $1.5 billion in funds for nuclear material management, environmental cleanup, and construction at the Savannah River Site

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos joined me and my colleagues on the House Education and Workforce Committee for a full hearing on “Examining the Policies and Priorities of the U.S. Department of Education.”

I appreciate the important work she is doing for our schoolchildren across the country!

It was a busy week for meetings in my D.C. office! I met with the American College of Surgeons, the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, and the American College of Emergency Physicians - just to mention a few.

Thank you all for stopping by the office to discuss some of the issues you face in your field and how I can help at the federal level.

As a reminder, don’t forget to check out my website at allen.house.gov for the upcoming June community office hours near you!

On this Memorial Day Weekend, please join me in honoring and remembering all of those who have died fighting for our freedom. We are truly the “land of the free and home of the brave” because of the great sacrifice our fallen brothers and sisters made for our nation.
