Congressman Rick W. Allen (GA-12) released the following statement after the House and Senate passed a bipartisan budget bill in order to keep the government open:

“Today, I had to make a tough choice. We averted another long and costly government shutdown, but these backdoor deals must end.  I strongly believe that we need significant reforms to runaway mandatory spending in order to balance our budget and reduce our deficits.

“Ultimately, when it comes down to it, my job is to represent the people of Georgia-12 and this legislation provided my district with some critical support. We increased funding for our military, one of the main responsibilities of Congress, assisted our cotton farmers, and helped preserve the future of nuclear energy. Looking to the future, we shouldn’t have to make tough choices like this anymore. We need to get our budget process back to regular order,” said Congressman Allen.

Today’s continuing resolution addressed a variety of unique issues, including:

• Extension of the Nuclear Production Tax Credit – Georgia-12 is leading the way in the expansion of our nation’s nuclear energy resources, constructing two of the first new nuclear reactors in the United States in more than 30 years, and the Nuclear Production Tax Credit is critical to continue America’s dominance in the global nuclear industry.
• Defense Funding – Our military faces a critical readiness gap that must be remedied. Thankfully by including full funding for our troops, they will be provided with the adequate resources they need as well as a well-deserved pay raise for soldiers like those at Fort Gordon. 
• Repeal of the Independent Payment Advisory Board – Created by Obamacare, the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB) consists of fifteen unelected, unaccountable bureaucrats with unilateral authority to slash Medicare spending as they see fit. By repealing this board, we will give seniors more control over their healthcare decisions.
• Seed cotton eligibility for the Price Loss Coverage (PLC) and the Agricultural Risk Coverage (ARC) programs – Beginning with the 2018 crop year, this action addresses ongoing disaster-related economic challenges facing cotton producers in our district. It will allow them to participate in the programs just as all other major U.S. commodity producers do.
