Rep. Allen Addresses Department of Energy’s Decision to Repurpose MOX Facility

U.S. Congressman Rick W. Allen (R-Ga-12) issued the following statement after Department of Energy Secretary Rick Perry executed a waiver to conclude construction of the Mixed-Oxide Fuel Fabrication Facility (MOX) at Savannah River Site. Additionally, the National Nuclear Security Administration recommended repurposing the current MOX facility at Savannah River Site to produce plutonium pits, while also maximizing pit production activities at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

“I still believe that MOX is the most viable way forward to dispose of our weapons grade plutonium. While I am disappointed that the Department of Energy made the decision to pursue the ‘dilute and dispose’ method, I am encouraged by their decision to begin producing plutonium pits at Savannah River Site. Plutonium pit production is critical to our national security, and will be an enduring mission for years to come.”
