The advocacy on behalf of veterans exhibited by former American Legion member Ray Hendrix now is being permanently honored in his home state of Georgia. The Department of Veterans Affairs clinic in Statesboro, Ga., recently was renamed to honor the 64-year Legionnaire. The ceremony took place in late May and officially renamed the facility the Ray Hendrix VA Clinic. U.S. House Resolution 3946, passed in December 2018, authorized naming the clinic to honor Hendrix, who started the effort to get a VA clinic located in Statesboro. Hendrix served 42 years in the U.S. Army and National Guard, rising to the rank of commander sergeant major. A member of American Legion Dexter Allen Post 90 in Dexter, Ga., Hendrix served as department commander from 1977 to 1978, was a member of various American Legion national committees and commissions, and represented Georgia on the National Executive Committee from 1999 to 2009. The renaming ceremony was attended by Hendrix’s wife, Mary, several members of his family, local and state leaders, and U.S. Rep. Rick Allen, who introduced legislation to rename the clinic. During the ceremony, the Statesboro Herald reported, Allen said, “I have no doubt that the Ray Hendrix name and legacy will live on for generations to come with the quality care that this clinic will continue to provide to our nation’s bravest.” |
