Rep. Allen Announces 2022 Congressional Art Competition Winners

AUGUSTA - Congressman Rick W. Allen (GA-12) recognized the winners of the 2022 Congressional Art Competition during a special reception at the Westobou Gallery in Augusta on Friday.

Members of Congress sponsor this competition each spring, challenging students from across the nation to produce an original artwork depicting life in their home district. This year's competition drew participants from ten area high schools, whose submissions were scored by a panel of judges.

The first-place winner's artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one full year, and its student artist will receive a scholarship to further their artistic development at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Other finalists will have their work displayed in one of Congressman Allen's district offices. This year's winners included:

First Place: "Waffle Home" by Riley Flynn, Greenbrier High School

Second Place: "Dreamscape" by Mackenzi Park, Greenbrier High School

Third Place: "Fun at the Fair" by Ashley Ball, Greenbrier High School

Additionally, public voting for the People's Choice Award occurred between May 3-10 on Congressman Allen's official Facebook page. The winning artwork, with 628 votes at the time of tabulation, was "The Year That Changed Everything" by Ciara Smith of Harlem High School.

Following the reception, Congressman Allen made the following statement:

"Each year, this competition represents an opportunity to recognize and celebrate all the talented student artists who call our district 'home.' And each year, I am impressed by the sheer talent and dedication these young people display with their artwork.

"It's truly a privilege to spend time with these students, as well as their parents and teachers, to honor their hard work and congratulate them all on a job well done.

"My thanks go out to the Westobou Gallery for allowing us to put these wonderful pieces on display, and to all the talented student artists who participated in the competition. I hope they will continue to nurture their talents so they may someday share their gifts with the whole world."
