Rep. Allen co-sponsors bill to defund IRS enforcers and codify tax break for Americans

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Rick W. Allen (GA-12) co-sponsored legislation to remove funding for the 87,000 new Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agents hired to conduct tax audits on middle-income Americans.

The Defunding the IRS Army Act, introduced by Rep. Jim Banks (IN-03), would rescind the partisan Inflation Reduction Act’s $80 billion in new IRS funding, which would increase audits on thousands of individuals earning less than $75,000 per year.

This legislation would instead use those funds to permanently reduce Americans’ tax burden by codifying the increase to the standard deduction first passed under the 115th Republican-led Congress in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, which is set to expire in 2025.

Upon co-sponsoring the bill, Congressman Allen made the following statement:

“With inflation hovering near 40-year highs and American families struggling to make ends meet, the Biden administration’s insistence on deploying an army of tax auditors is not just tone-deaf—it’s callous. Remember, these are the same folks who wanted to give the IRS access to your bank account last year! Instead of going after hardworking taxpayers, Congress should be working on policies that will jumpstart our economy and spur economic growth. That’s why I am proud to co-sponsor Rep. Banks’ bill, and I look forward to working with my Republican colleagues to deliver permanent tax relief for American families.”
