Local leaders share update on Bon Air Apartments

By Lauren Young

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WFXG) - FOX54 was first to report last year on the conditions at Summerville's Bon Air Apartments. This week, FOX54 spoke with some of the politicians who told us then they were demanding improvement.

After Bon Air Apartments failed a HUD inspection, Congressman Rick Allen and Commissioner Catherine Smith-McKnight told FOX54 and Bon Air residents they'd be requiring the owner, Redwood Housing, to provide regular evidence of improvements to the property, including quarterly reports. The two had a walk-through tour of Bon Air in September.

Smith-McKnight says, it's a new quarter and it's time for a new update.

“I usually get a quarterly update from the owner. It’s time for a new one. I want to make sure we’ve got progress going on. It’s time for me to do another walk-through, whether I can get Congressman Allen to do a walk-through, I do want to do that again and see what’s been accomplished.”

Allen says he does receive frequent communication from Redwood Housing. "I don't talk to them weekly," he explains, "but often. We’re on top of it. You see construction going on right now, and the information we got from them, and HUD is monitoring this as well, is that so far they are meeting and complying with our demands. As long as they’re doing that, we’re going to be fine.”

Allen adds Redwood Housing is still awaiting tax credit funding in order to make some of the major renovations they presented to him and Smith-McKnight last year. It is still unclear when or if Redwood Housing will receive that funding and if there is an alternative funding option in place.
