Today, America pauses to honor the ultimate sacrifice paid for our freedom. Monday morning, the community gathered at the All Wars Memorial in Downtown Augusta to commemorate the bravery of our fallen soldiers.
The ceremony was filled with local leaders, servicemembers, veterans, prayer, TAPS and a crowd singing "God Bless America." The event started at 11 a.m.
“It’s not about words spoken solemnly once a year on a Monday morning at a ceremony. But rather, changing how we approach life.” said Maj. Gen. Paul Stanton, Fort Gordon.
"Regardless of how you start, what your socioeconomic status is, regardless of what faith you’re affiliated with, or your skin color, those protections are provided to us through this great constitution and the great men and women who serve this country.” Mayor Garnett Johnson, Augusta.
“[The sound of the bagpipes] It takes me back to 1966 and '67 in Vietnam. We lost so many friends. Not only Marines but Army, Navy and Air Force...Freedom is indescribable. It’s something that you earn. It’s not given to you. Somebody had to pay the price for it.” said Marion Gibson, Marine Veteran.
"In World War One, 116,516 were killed in action. In World War Two, 405,399 didn’t come back from that war...”
"When I was a kid, Memorial Day was the unofficial start of summer, it was graduation weekend, it was barbeques. It still is. Frankly, it needs to be, because that’s what those who have Fallen fought for.” said Maj. Gen. Stanton.
“..And this is a promise to never forget the strength and courage that has preserved those very freedoms that we enjoy.” said Congressman Rick Allen, GA-12.
"We also acknowledge all the young soldiers that stand behind you as we tie together those that sit at the front who blazed the trail for those who stand behind us ready to serve, ready at a moment’s notice, ready to meet the call.” said Maj. Gen. Stanton.
