'One of the most gracious first ladies': Augusta-area leaders mourn Rosalynn Carter

Many Georgians are mourning alongside and sending prayers to former President Jimmy Carter's family. His longtime wife and first lady Rosalynn Carter died Sunday at 96-years-old at her home in Plains, Georgia. Many Augusta-area leaders like Augusta Mayor Garnett Johnson remember the life she lived and legacy she left. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Carter Family as they mourn the passing of former First Lady Rosalynn Carter," Johnson wrote on Facebook. "She will always be remembered for her humanitarian work and mental health advocacy." Augusta Commissioner and Richmond County Democratic Party Chairman Jordan Johnson shared an old picture of himself next to Rosalynn Carter on his Facebook along with the following message: "We bid farewell to a remarkable First Lady whose legacy of love and compassion for humankind will always be remembered. May she rest in peace." Columbia County Democratic Party issued the following statement via Messenger: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of First Lady Rosalynn Carter. Mrs. Carter’s life’s work will be memorialized by the countless lives she touched through her selfless advocacy. We are sending our thoughts and prayers to President Carter and the entire Carter family in these difficult times." U.S. Rep. Rick Allen asked on X, formerly known as Twitter, for the public to join him and his wife Robin Allen to in prayer for the Carter family. "Rosalynn was a beloved Georgian and dedicated her life to serving others," he wrote. "Our nation will miss her dearly, but her legacy will never be forgotten." Grovetown Councilwoman Ceretta Smith wrote on her Facebook, "Condolences to the Carter Family. Rosalyn Carter is one of the most gracious First Ladies of our time. RIP First Lady Carter." Blythe Mayor Tom Cobb wrote via Messenger, "Rosalynn Carter set the standards for all other first ladies to follow. She was always a lady before, during, and after her time as a first lady. She will be missed. May God bless the Carter family." For those wanting to pay their respects, the Carter Center released a schedule of events with funeral services starting Nov. 27 and continuing through Nov. 29 in Atlanta and Sumter County. |
