Laken Riley Act Signed Into Law by President Trump

Today, Congressman Rick W. Allen (GA-12) and Republican Members of the Georgia Delegation attended the White House signing ceremony as President Donald J. Trump signed S. 5, the Laken Riley Act, into law. Following the ceremonial bill signing, Congressman Allen issued the statement below:

"President Trump and House Republicans made a promise to the American people to secure our border and prevent violent illegal aliens from roaming our communities. Now the law of the land, this critical legislation helps ensure no family has to endure what Laken Riley's family has this past year. While no legislative effort can soften the pain and suffering caused by this heinous act of violence, I am grateful to President Trump for signing the Laken Riley Act into law today. We will never allow Laken's memory to fade, and Robin and I continue to pray for her family and loved ones."

BACKGROUND: The Laken Riley Act requires U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE) to arrest illegal aliens who commit theft offenses and mandates that these illegal aliens are detained until they are removed from the country. It also ensures states have standing to bring civil actions against federal officials who refuse to enforce immigration law. The House of Representatives passed the Laken Riley Act earlier this year and passed the Senate-amended version last week, which President Trump signed into law today.
