Allen: Today is a Tough Day Not Only for the American Farmer, but for America

U.S. Congressman Rick W. Allen (R-Ga-12) issued the following statement after H.R. 2, the Agriculture and Nutrition Act of 2018, better known as the Farm Bill, failed to garner the necessary support on the House floor today. As a member of the House Agriculture Committee, Congressman Allen played an integral role in writing and marking up the legislation in the committee process before the bill was brought to the House floor for a full vote by the House of Representatives.

“Today is a tough day not only for the American farmer, but for America. My colleagues and I in the House of Representatives had the opportunity to provide a brighter future for our agricultural producers across the country and those struggling to make ends meet. Instead, some members chose to play partisan politics and the bill failed.

Those of us on the House Agriculture Committee worked diligently to craft a farm bill that works for our farmers and makes strides to fill the over six million jobs open in America. Facing a 52% decline in net farm income, our producers nationwide have had their backs against the wall for far too long and they deserve better. While I am disappointed in today’s outcome, I will not stop fighting for rural America to ensure that their needs and concerns are met with open ears and bold action during my time in Congress.”

Due to procedural motions, the House of Representatives may reconsider the Agriculture and Nutrition Act of 2018 at a later date.
